My worst mistake!! 😭

Ok so I did a podcast episode about this not so long ago and had a great response so I thought I would touch upon it in the Newsletter!

Im pretty sure this mistake is will champion any mistakes you have made or ever will make

Im telling this story because I don’t think we talk about our mistakes enough … In fact so many people pretend they don’t make mistakes and I think that is simply not true … Well it isn’t for me anyway!

So … 7 or 8 years ago, I had a customer (an electrician) who hadnt paid for a year …. Yes, a year and no that wasn’t the mistake!! Although that is a pretty bad mistake on my behalf!

You know the story … he kept promising to pay and then giving me a sob story as to why he couldn’t pay.

I kept chasing, even going round to his house and he would again promise to pay and he was a “nice guy” … Or so I thought

This kept on going for a year

I finally had enough … BUT, I didn’t want to sell his stuff because it was the tools he used to make a living.

So I had a bright idea (trying to be the kind considerate storage owner)…. I would hire a removal firm and take his stuff back to his house one evening.

I would be the bigger man and say … “Listen I know there must be a problem … I don’t want to add to your problems, here is your stuff. If you ever get to a position to pay then you know where I am”

So me and the removals chap, broke the lock off his container

Drove to his house

Rang the door bell (he knew we were coming) but no answer

We then sent him a message saying his belongings were going to be left in his garden

So far so good!

But while placing his goods on the garden, the removals man said to “I thought you said he was an electrician?? … he’s got a lot of plumping equipment!”

I thought nothing of it … just thought he may have been storing a friends goods.

I then got a call a couple of days later from a customer

“Dean, my unit has been broken in to and all my stuff has gone”

I panicked and ran to the site … As soon as I got there id realised what id done

Anyone guess????

YEP!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO …. Id emptied the wrong unit!

Then I checked the unit that was actually storing the bad payers stuff … and you guessed it …

All his goods had gone!

OHHH SHIT!

Not only did the electrician get away with not paying for a year, id given him all the plumbers goods as well. WHAT A PLONKER!

The only thing I could do was come clean to the plumber and buy all the equipment id given away.

To be fair … he was very understanding and even kept storing with me … Gluten for punishment or what.

So like I said at the beginning … Im pretty sure this is the worst mistake anyone has ever made in storage … To be fair I can’t believe im sharing this with you haha 🫣
