I LOVE digging into the Self Storage Association’s industry report—and this week, I’m breaking down the juiciest takeaways for you.

Today, we’re looking at one of my favorite topics:

Why do people actually use self storage?

Two Main Reasons People Use Self Storage

• Personal self storage (today’s focus)

• Business self storage (we’ll dive into this tomorrow!)

For easy numbers:

• 75% of self storage use is personal

• 25% is business

Let’s zoom in on the biggest slice of the pie: Personal use.

The Biggest Reason? It’s Not What You Think…

Most people guess that “moving home” is the #1 reason—and they’re right… but only just.

• 27% of personal self storage use is for moving home
  (That’s 21.7% + 5.6% for two types of moves)

But here’s the shocker:

73% of personal storage use is for reasons other than moving!

I’ll be honest—I expected the moving number to be higher. But this is actually great news for our industry.

Why This Is Great News

• We’re not reliant on just one factor (like the housing market) for customers

• Even if home moves slow down, there’s still a massive market out there

If you’re worried about the housing market right now, remember:

Only 27% of customers are actually home movers. The rest are coming for other reasons.

What Are the Other Reasons?

• 14%: Life events (think bereavement, divorce, new baby, etc.)

• 10%: Simply not enough space at home

This is gold for your marketing strategy!

How to Use This Data

• Build strong relationships with estate agents and funeral directors
  (Hate suggesting to have relationships with funeral directors buttttt as my family found out having storage when someone passes is beneficial and, these connections are genuinely valuable for your business)

• Don’t just focus on movers—target anyone experiencing a big life change, or simply running out of space
