To be honest, I’m not surprised that 40% of new self storage openings are container storage.

In fact, I’ve got a brand new YouTube video dropping today that dives into exactly why container storage is the best option if you’re just starting out. (Keep an eye out for it!)

From “Poor Relative” to Industry Star

It wasn’t too long ago that container storage was seen as the poor relative of the industry—almost an embarrassment, if we’re being honest.

I actually remember when people suggested container operators should have a totally separate conference from the indoor guys… I kid you not!

But times have changed. The quality of external operators has skyrocketed, and now most indoor operators have container units in their car parks to maximise revenue. (Something I’ve been shouting from the rooftops for years!)

The Numbers Don’t Lie

• 40% of new self storage openings are now container sites.

• For context, just three years ago, 87% of new stores were internal.

That’s a massive shift!

Why?

• Lower capital requirements

• Faster path to cash flow positive
  Both are super attractive for new operators.

My Take

I can see this trend continuing well into 2026 and beyond. If you’re thinking about getting into self storage, don’t overlook container storage—it’s no longer the “embarrassing cousin,” but a smart, profitable way to start and scale.
